We begin with a recognition that every piece of wood is unique, each with it's own distinctive characteristics. Our finishing process is designed with the special care required to enhance the beauty of the wood and to assure a quality product. Depending on the wood selected and the desired appearance, the following steps are followed:
Sap Stain - Applied to balance and even the color of toned sap wood
Toner - Provides an overall, uniform base color
Wash Coat- A light sealer that controls the "bite" of the wiping stain
Wiping Stain - A stain hand-wiped on to bring out the natural characteristics of the wood
Strike-Out - An enhancement to the grain by sanding with sandpaper or steel wool
Distressing - Deliberate defects added to the wood to simulate age and/or wear
Sealer - Used to seal in color and raise any loose fibers for sanding
Lacquer - Coats of various sheens of catalytic lacquers are applied to add depth and durability to the finish
Wooling - Steel wool is used with a mild abrasive wax to increase smoothness
Polish - Cleans and adds smoothness to the finish
